As many of you will know, I am a huge Harry Potter fan, the books more than the movies, though I enjoy them too. And now they tell me Dumbledore, my favourite character, was (is?) gay. When I heard the rumour my first reaction was, “No, no, that’s SpongeBob”, but as it turns out it seems it is Dumbledore after all. Now, in the case of SpongeBob, since sea sponges reproduce asexually, the whole case fell apart for lack of evidence. But, I’m sure we can all agree, Dumbledore is a long way up the food chain. So what do you think? Is this just a lot of nonsense? Does it matter? Is there anything in this story that’s interesting at all?

Dumbledore's sexuality is completely and totally irrlelvant.
Plus, who knows if wizard's even have the same rules as us muggles?
If Dumbledore wants to make a public statement on his sexual predilections he should be free to do so and free not be 'outed' by third parties, no matter how close to him they are.

I think that Rowlings was completely wrong in her statement that Dumbledore was/is gay. Her own statement shows that she is not calling a spade, a spade.
In her statement, she said that many of her adult fans recognized that Dumbledore had an infactuation with Harry which would show that Dumbledore was/is gay. In reality, if Dumbledore had an infactuation with Harry, a child, the relationship would be one of a pedophile.

Since writing my first comment, I have now found and read her whole statement(s), not just the TV snipits.
I will have to side with those from the gay right's movement who wish that Rowling's would have made Dumbledore's sexuality implicit except that I wish that she would make her comments more implicit.
She talks early on about a relationship with Gridlewald, but then she talks about children seeing friendship while sensitive adults will see the infactuation. Considering the discussions of his relationship with Grindlewald is such a tiny piece of the book while his relationship with Harry is a major theme throughout 7 books, what is a person to think?

is the real statement re. the question, the lack of statements? That is, has our society (finally!) become so inclusive that sexuality has become a non-issue? Another question might be, why did Rowling feel the need to reference any sexuality with respect to her characters? That would seem that it's not a non-issue after all? I am perhaps pleased that she wants her book to be inclusive of all members of society but I don't actually see many 'races' or ethnicities portrayed (or am I wrong?). So, what was her intent in 'outing' Dumbledore (as Nathan indicated)? Controversy? A few ban of her books in certain environments? Hmmmmmm
I am totally okay with Dumbledore (or anyone else) being gay. I do not believe that God cares who I love, but rather how I am with who I love. Am I honest? honourable? generous of spirit? Am I controlling? manipulative? Is there room in my love for two people? Or is it more like one and a half? One and a bit? One?
Of course, I'm a Babylonian. But I don't really see much for a Christian to object to either, as I understand such things. I mean, the whole issue came up because he wasn't doing anything, not because he was. I find that sad, but is it not, in the Christian community, considered appropriate behaviour for someone who finds himself in Dumbledore's position?
